The Department of Japanese Language and Japanese Studies is a newly established department by merging the Department of Japanese Language and Literature and the Department of Japanese Studies in March 2022. The Department of Japanese Education, the predecessor of the Department of Japanese Language and Literature was launched in 1973, which was the first case among local universities. The Department of Japanese Studies was officially inaugurated as the first of its kind in South Korea in 1977. Following the undergraduate program, Graduate School of Japanese Language and Literature opened in 1978, and graduate school of Japanese Studies in 1996.


The goal of the Department of Japanese Language and Japanese Studies is to nurture Japan experts who comprehensively and systematically understand Japanese politics, economy, history and culture, with a high level of Japanese language competency, and who can take the role of a real bridge across Korea and Japan in order to provide knowledge and information to Korean society and expand mutual exchange between the two nations in the 21st century.


In order to achieve these educational objectives, the Department of Japanese Language and Japanese Studies, Keimyung University implements academic exchange with the sister universities in Japan, the famous universities with the tradition such as University of Tsukuba, Sophia University, Ochanomizu University, Aoyama Gakuin University, St, Andrew’s University, Hiroshima Shudo University, Gakushuin University, and University of the Ryukyus. We are making our best effort to nurture Japan-region experts who have competitive skills and knowledge by activating students’ club activities within the department such as Japanese language club including JIKU.


With their wide range of knowledge on Japan and Japanese language skills, the graduates of the Department of Japanese Language and Japanese Studies get positions not only in domestic companies but also Korean branches of Japanese enterprises, and in many universities in South Korea and overseas.

As the human exchange and the material exchange between Korea and Japan increase further, the role and working field for the graduates of the Department of Japanese Studies will also be wider and further.
